Hello,

I just picked up this orchid at my local nursery. I've only ever had Phalaeonopsis because I can keep them alive. The manager said he thought this was a zygopetalum but after some googling, I'm not positive. Could anyone help in identifying this orchid so I can do some impulse buy research?

Thanks in advance!

Your hunch was right. It is an Oncidium type, possibly a Beallara, although without a label it's impossible to be specific. It will need a bit more light than a phalaenopsis, an east or west facing window would be ideal. They require more watering than a phalaenopsis too, keeping them moist and not allowing it to dry too much, a fine bark is a good medium to grow them in. They will flower off new pseudobulbs, but keep the old ones as they contribute towards keeping the plant healthy. They do best repotted when a new pseudobulb is starting to grow new roots. You'll find plenty of information if you look in the ONCIDIUM section of the forum.

Yes, it is a Beallara type Oncidium hybrid. There is a very well known and widely distributed one called Aliceara (Beallara) Tahoma Glacier. Many very similar versions of it exist. Given how common it is and the close resemblance that's probably what this is, but a similar hybrid can't be ruled out. That will definitely lead you to correct care instructions. though.

Thank you both very much!

I ran across a picture of Beallara Tahoma Glacier 'Sugar Sweet' and it looks nearly identical. Still a noid but I'm greatful to have a starting place.
