Help with identification
Default Help with identification

Hi,

I need a bit of help from people who know orchids better than me I bought this poor plant basically half dead in a supermarket. I was kind of suspicious it will survive, but surprisingly after I brought it home and a period of being dormant in a very bad shape, it started to recover and grow again. At the moment it has 3 new growth and although old parts does not look so healthy, new growth seem good and gives hope it will recover completely. The thing is that I am not familiar with this type and if someone can help me identify it, it would help me know how to take better care for it. Thanks ))

It's some sort of orchid in the Oncidium alliance. Without flowers, it can be difficult to tell.

Thanks Can I ask, considering it was half dead when I bought it, some of those "pods" are missing all the leaves, what should I do, is it ok to remove them? And if so how?

Do nothing. Those pods (called pseudobulbs, aka pbulbs) are water/nutrients reservoirs. They are shrivelled 'cause have been used by the plant. They are still green so they are still useful to the plant. Also, leaves lost in old pbulbs is normal in many orchids.

I see some new roots coming. This might be a good time to repot in a slightly bigger pot and get those new roots into fresh bark. It is in the oncidium tribe and rbarta is correct, your old pbulbs are storehouse, even if ugly. You are doing a great job!

Oncidium NoID.
Do not remove "pods" (called pseudobulbs), they serve as a storage system for water, nutrients, etc. They also photosynthesize for the orchid (they're green). My oncidium loves water. And because the pbulbs (short for pseudobulbs) are wrinkled I would give it water.

I've been watering it regularly, soaking for 20-30 mins, draining etc...but watering seems to have no effect on how much pbulbs are wrinkled, they were like this when I bought it and they are always like this, even after watering... :/

Welcome, TyrAVB! You are correct, the pbulbs will not plump up again once they are wrinkled. As new growth appears, you will know it is getting enough water if the new leaves are smooth, not pleated or folded. Don't worry about the bulbs, they can still do their job in spite of wrinkles.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

If you water properly, the new pseudobulbs will remain smooth. The old ones will not change. It does not hurt the plant when the pseudobulbs shrivel.

There is a forum here for Oncidium and relatives. From the right menu, look for Forums, and look down to Oncidium. You can read threads there on how to care for this kind of orchid.
