Could we see the whole plant please? From what I can see, it is a reed stem orchid. Perhaps Epidendrum radicans? They throw a lot of aerial roots. Mine is potted in bark in a large clay pot with a tomato cage around it to subdue it. Full sun, water couple x a week you should be fine. They are ugly and gangly until they bloom. When I get home, I'll post a picture of mine. I think Fernando knows a bit about these maybe he can chime in too.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!
This could be an Arachnis or an Arachnis hybrid. They are in the Vanda alliance. They tend to grow like a vine. You could probably plant it outside in the ground if you wanted to, planting just the bottom part of the stem in the soil, up to the first or second roots. You could put it into a pot the same way.

So, in that light, a full picture would be helpful...

I believe the entire plant appears in a couple of the photos. Were it mine I would follow ES's advice.
By the way, you say there are 2.5 feet but I only see one in the first pic and two in the second.

Oh, very funny, John. But, if you look closely at the middle of the stem, you will see what looks to be a new growth. ES may be right because Arachnis are noted for that pattern of growth.

That must be the missing half of a foot! What a heel I am to have missed it. In the future I'll try harder to toe the line. Yes, I see it. I'd still go with ES's advice.
