New Dendrobium with keikis
Default New Dendrobium with keikis

Hello,

I recently purchased what I believe is a Dendrobium orchid. I'm wondering if anyone can help me ID it? Also I'm assuming that all these keikis can be removed from the main shoots and giving their own pots?

It currently has six flowers in clusters of three, however, one is dying already. The flowers are also fragrant if that helps.

Thank you for your help.

This is a dendrobium Nobile-- a deciduous dendrobium, and yes, they have a lot of kiekis. They are ready for their own pots. When a Kieki has 3 roots an inch or so long, usually they can be repotted. Just sanitize a clipper of some sort, and remove them. Put them in spag moss or orchid seedling mix.

Although no one can say without a genetics test, it looks like Den.Angel Smile 'Kibi' by Yamamoto Dendrobiums, Hawaii.

If you go to the Yamamoto site you can read how to grow them. It is not hard, but they have definite requirements if you want them to flower.

Edit June 15 2020:
Yamamoto Dendrobiums in Japan hybridizes and produces a great number of these plants. Their Web site formerly had excellent growing information for hobbyists. Unfortunately it is no longer there. You can still look at the varieties they grow, and maybe see one very similar to yours.

I saved the page, and summarized it in a post in this thread:
Uncertain if Dendrobium is still alive

Yamamoto now has a page showing how to force Dendrobium nobile for Christmas flowering in Japan's climate. There is a lot to learn from that page, but it is intended for growers who can artificially heat and cool their greenhouses during off seasons. Note they use coconut husk for growing medium, which many orchidists would say retains too much water for orchids. For many orchids that is correct, but this is a very thirsty orchid.

Thank you both for your help. I'd really like to repot this orchid since it's currently in moss. Should I wait till the end of summer to do this? I assume repotting with impact the blooming cycle.

I would wait until it's done blooming unless the roots are rotting.
