Dendrobium sulawesii? Male
Default Dendrobium sulawesii?

Well, yesterday i bought another plant.
The tag says it's Dendrobium sulawesii, but i appears that such a name does not actually exist.
There is however a Dendrobium sulawesiense, or correclty D. glomeratum, but my plant, although quite similar, does not look like it (or maybe it does, and it's just me).
since the growers sells quite a few hybrids, that look similar, it's quite possible, that its a mislabeled hybrid .
In all pictures of D. glomeratum i could find, all flower parts were vividly pink, except for the lip, that was orange, mine has a distinct orangish tingetowards the bottom of the flower.
Is this normal variation in the species, a hybrid or a third thing altogether?

It's mounted on cork, like I bought it. I inteded to leave it there, as the grower said it prefers to be mounted.
It's also supposed to be moisture loving intermediate to warm grower. With no rest.
since that how its been grown until now, I'll try to continue so until I found out I'm making it injustice.
The shading of pink to orange, plus being a Dendrobium is what compelled me to buy it. It was this one or a Diplocaulobium, but since i didnt know Diplocaulobium (never heard of it before yesterday) i chose this one.
Plus, i find the habitus of this plant very jungle-y, with its half pendant dried stems.

I have looked at that picture three times now and it still looks like it is potted in a rectangular shallow pot. I apologize. But, it is beautiful and was a good choice, Imho.

I'm not an expert. The plant looks a lot like the D. glomeratum I have, but which hasn't flowered yet. There are quite a few D. glomeratum photos here on Orchid Board so you can compare.

I checked the forum and i googled again...
It is quite similar, but there are subtle differences.
Most obvious is the colour; mine isnt that deep pink, but more orangish with a distict orange overshadowing on the the lower outer tepals i dont notice on the other D. glomeratum pictures
The second is the shape. Most other pictures of glomeratum have distinctly star shaped flower, so the overall shape is quite "classical" angiosperm flower; mine is more diadem shaped, the lower two outer tepals are not touching, but pointing outwartds at almost 180°
Also the leaves on mine look softer, more wavy amd grassy...less orchidy
I dont know, am i being too hairsplitting? It's just that in the course of my universiy program i did a botanical survey on an aeria with a lot of orchids, and I know some Dactylorhiza, Orchis/Anacamptis and Epipactis are split into different species (if not genera) for less, so now i jump on every difference i see, cause it might be something exciting . And maybe in orchid business isnt so, but in fish useness are often mislabeled, so i prefer to re-determine the species myself... Plus i am having fun doing this, so no harm done

As a general rule of thumb, I always thing that dens prefer to be mounted.

I have one of these on order at the moent, so I shall be interested to see if mine looks like yours.

Jakob - Try searching for Den. Hsinying Chrysopense.
I think you have a hybrid there.
