This is a Vanda I got from a local grower because he was going to throw it away! He didn't remember the name but it is likely it could be a species. It is slightly fragrant with a chemical citrus...? smell to my nose. The leaves are terete and the plant must be nearly 5 feet long. Anyone have a guess on this one?

It's very pretty! Do you grow it in the window year round?

The terete leaves indicate it has Papilionanthe (formerly terete Vanda) background, but the flat flower shows it is a hybrid with probably Vanda sanderiana background too. If it is a primary hybrid it may be possible to identify it. I'll do some looking later if no one else comes up with something.

Well to be honest I just got it. It is actually is serious trouble. When I repotted it, there was no good roots on the entire plant. NONE! I couldn't believe it was able to bloom with no roots at all, other than a tiny quarter of a millimeter sized root tip. I have been misting that 3-4 times a day and it seems to be growing. I can only hope it branches and the plant makes it.

I just saw this post. Recovering a Vanda with a tiny root system is possible.

The problem is they are evaporating water from the top while the tiny amount of roots tries to keep up. The grower needs to minimize water loss, provide as much water as possible to the roots and apply rooting hormones. Misting isn't likely to be enough.

As hard as it will be, I would cut off the flowers. They are evaporating large amounts of water. Leaving flowers on a plant with minimal roots is like taking somebody new on a very expensive date when you don't have a job.

I try to reroot Vandas out of pots, bare-root. If I were in your position I would take the plant out of the pot and not repot until it has a substantial root system.

Put the plant in the most humid spot you can find, to minimize water loss through the leaves.

Provide very bright shade or dappled sun until the plant has more roots.

Soak the plant's root zone in water every day for 6-12 hours, or overnight. This will provide as much water as possible to the remaining root system.

Get yourself some kelp extract from a hydroponics shop or KelpMax from First Ray's. Use that once a week for a good long soak.

Good luck!
