I'm pretty sure it's a mule-ear Oncidium, especially with the mention of a long flower spike. Lophiaris or Trichocentrum.

It really seems to be mineral deposits, heavy ones.
In the first pic (2nd set) the stains are so huge they seem to form a crust...it it was some kind of desease, with that extent, probably the plant wouldn't have enough energy to grow such a huge spike.

Looks like a somewhat sickly Psychopsis to me. I had one with the same dappled leaves, and the spike remnants looks almost identical to mine. Although if there is no pseudobulb I'm not sure what it could be... Hmm.

Id say it is a trichocentrum. That would explain the dappled leaves and the large spike.

Seems pretty certain that it is Lophiaris (mule ear, included by some in Trichocentrum). The new growth and the spike both look very typical Oncidium alliance. If it isn't Lophiaris then it is something uncommon that is fooling us.
