Orchid Identification website
Default Orchid Identification website

Hello, I'm an orchid enthusiast with a small orchid collection. I don't know the name of many of my orchids and have tried to find information on the Internet and identify them. It's always been difficult because most articles or forum posts use species names and not pictures.
Therefore I have set up the website Orchid Identification | A growing list of Orchids with pictures and details grouped by types and features to ease identification. where you can browse a picture gallery and filter the orchids by color, size, species and other characteristics in order to find your orchid. Or you can send me pictures of your orchids to be added to the gallery.
I hope this website will grow and help many people identify their orchids.

So please check out the website, leave some comments and contribute with orchid pictures if you are willing. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Mary

Hi Mary.

I commend you on your interest and enthusiasm, but I feel that you might be biting off more than you can chew, for little benefit.

There are some 30,000 identified orchid species, arguably a quarter-million named, registered hybrids, and untold numbers of unregistered ones, many of which look very similar. A x (B x C), (A x B) x C, and (A x C) x B may have similar genetics that could lead to similar-appearing flowers, but would be three, distinct hybrids. Add to that the fact that culture also plays a role in the appearance of a flower, and reliable identification is near to impossible.

Purchasing named hybrids and being diligent about keeping the labels intact and legible is far more reliable.

I sure wish there was a place/site where an orchid noob, like me, could at least find the basic stuff to get within 80% of a good (not perfect) ID.

Like one of those 'yes' or 'no' charts could be very helpful
Many of us don't need "Phal. CJM3FL" (Phal. Ochid Whisperer x Phal. Ray 2012).
Most would be happy with Phal. CJM3FL--white flowers.

Flower shape, leave shape, plant shape would be a place to start.
I know these can be (are) different in some plant variety to plant variety.

How many people join just to get a Dendri ID?
If it's something they could look up themselves (I know, maybe 5% would use it first), it be could be useful.

I've looked. For a long time online.
Nothing....at least nothing easy to use.

Just saying....

I can't endorse them as a business since I have not purchased from them but I have recommended their Orchid Identification section. It covers the basics.

Our brains pick out similarities and categorize things. Just look at lots of identified photos and you will start figuring thing out.

Yes, I agree that having all orchids on the website and managing that would be impossible, but that is not my goal. I meant this for beginners like me who purchased an orchid with the generic name of "Cambria" and doesn't know further.
I don't intend to have all 30 000 orchids there, but just the usual 1000 that you can find in stores.

I believe people that buy specific orchids from specialty stores already know the name when they buy the orchids and therefore no need to look at a list of pictures to identify it. But if you buy an orchid from the flower shop around the corner, you will have no idea how to figure out the name.

In the end we'll just see if this will work or not. For me it's worth a try.
