Identify This Please
Default Identify This Please

I was in a very rural area of Minas Gerias, Brasil where there were many wild orchids. I met a local man that owned a lot of land including rivers and waterfalls. He took me all around his properties for sight seeing. He showed me all kinds of wild orchids and other native plants.

He ended up giving me a number of various specimens. One of them is this plant in the pictures. I did not suspect it of being an orchid (it was very tiny when he gave to me), but as it started to develop and grow larger, I noticed how very orchid-like it was becoming -- especially the root structure.

He told me it was a beautiful, flowering plant, but did not specifically say it was an orchid. He definitely knows orchids, because he collects them from his properties and propagates them and spreads them all around.

It is possible he just did not tell me it was an orchid thinking I already knew this. But, I am very much a beginner with orchids, so I have no idea. When he gave it to me I had no idea what it was and never even suspected it was an orchid.

Anyway, please take a look and tell me what you think.

Thanks!

It looks like a reed stem Epidendrum.

There are a lot of those, and there are many natural hybrids from areas where species overlap, so it will be difficult to identify exactly - unless the flowers have some unique identify feature.

Yes! That looks to be it.

The plant was doing very poorly for over a year -- no growth whatsoever (no doubt due to its relocation). It just started to take off in the last month or two. I am very exited to see how it develops.

Thanks!
