Indigenous Orchid in Malawi
Hallo from Chintheche!
Suddenly this beautiful flower (see picture) appeared in my property behind the kitchen. It is clearly epiphytic with extensive root system.
The leaves are dark green, ovate, edges entire, slightly undulate with parallel veins. One leave is visible on the right corner of the pic.
When lately a giant tree was felled by a storm, I was lucky to stumble over some branches from the top with lots of the same species in all sizes attached. So this orchid is clearly indigenous!
A friend, who is very informed about orchids, guessed that it might be a mystacidium or aerangis spec, the pics which I could find in the www looked different.
Has anyone an idea which treasure I have got?
Greetings Stella

What a treat for you! I'd love to see that appear in my back yard. I can't help with identification, but I can admire.

Aerangis kotschyana is probably correct. Among Aerangis and related species generally recognized as native to Malawi it seems to be the only good match, even without a closeup. As far as is visible here, the leaves, inflorescence and flowers match Aerangis klotschyana and nothing else pictured in OrchidWiz.

Thanks a lot!
Aerangis kotschyana was also the answer of another orchid specialist!
I have more indigenous species growing in my gardens, will come back with detailed photos!
Greetings from Lake Malawi

Hallo from the warm heart of Africa!
In looking in the www at the photos of Aerangis kotschyana, the inflorescences are all much smaller (mine was at least 50 cm long) the single flowers further apart.
Questions for the specialists: Could it be that the growth in the natural habitat is different from that of orchids grown in an artificial environment?
Do orchids normally flower every year in nature?
I am waiting for Aerangis behind the kitchen to flower again. I bought the place in 2012 and only got one flower in July 2015 so far.
Looking forward to learn more about orchids!!
Thanks for your interest and help!
