It should be in a hanging basket. The flowers grow down. Looks like a Stanhopia. Stanhopia occulota grows on cliffs and humid forest trees from Mexico to Houndures. This guy needs a lot more humidity. And a hanging basket.
Looking at the flower, I'd say that it might be a Gongora - close relative of Stanhopea, same advice, it needs to be in a basket. Sphagnum moss might be a good medium. It holds moisture, and the spikes can easiliy poke out wherever they want to go, usually down or to the side.
i thought at the begining it was a stanhopea but couldn't find an exact match based on internet pictures. Now looking at the gongora genus it pretty much looks like one of them. Now to find which one exactly.
It indeed needs to be in a basket but for now it will have to stay in the pot for a little while as there is no place to hang it.
Thanks a lot Roberta and Optimist for your replies !!!!!!
Looks like G. galeata, armeniaca, or cassidae. They really don't need to be in baskets, although most including myself grow them that way. The spikes don't grow straight down like Stanhopea, but grow up from the base of the pseudobulbs and then arch downward.
