Hi everyone,
I bought an orchid last summer while it had just finished flowering. It looks different than other phalaenopsis - the leaves grow on a longer stem as you can see. After a month it started growing some kind of new growth / basal keiki - I'm not sure what that is. After 8 months it started flowering - the flowers look very interesting, but I also hope I could identify it or at least know more about it What do you guys think?
To me, it looks like a regular phal hybrid, with two plants in the pot. I don't know much about basal kikis. The people in the green house might not have noticed there were two plants.
Its a really pretty phal, and it is neat that you got two plants.
I think just a normal complex hybrid. It may have parentage from the phal equestris. The longer stem leaf growth seems to be a mutation or something that's why maybe it produced a basal keiki.
The plant grew a terminal spike from the crown. Sometimes, when this happens, the plant will no longer be able to generate new leaves from the crown, and the plant will produce basal keiki instead.
It is impossible to ID hybrid phals as many are very complex with a dozen plants mixed in. The best you can do is guess what some of the more dominant species involved may be.
Thank you, I never knew about such phenomena as terminal spike! That explains a lot, especially the longer stem. Also, this is very interesting - why does the terminal spike emerge?
I'm learning a lot in this forum
