Darn You Trader Joe's!!?
Not hoping for specifics here, but am wondering if it is possible given that I haven't seen many members of the Oncidium alliance with flowers that are this dark. I think this is a colmanara. The blooms glow a velvet red in full sunlight. It is faintly scented, typical orchid scent. Pseudobulbs are very round in shape. Leaves shaped like Oncidium Sweet Sugar.
Thanks for looking!

Looks like Colm Masai Red, except for the white on the lip - altho, I suppose it's possible it's Masai Red with some white on the lip
Nice find!

I'll post a clearer picture of it when I get back to my laptop. I was thinking maybe Colm. Masai Splash? I also saw another one that someone said was Colm. Wildcat 'Dark Star' but could find no other references to that orchid.

"Colmanara" Masai Red was registered as a hybrid of unknown parentage. It was later determined to be the same as another hybrid, Oncostele (or Odontoglossum) Midnight Miracles, and the registration of Masai Red was withdrawn. It never was legitimately a Colmanara, that was just a guess.
Midnight Miracles usually does not have this much white in the lip, but it isn't impossible. This is perhaps more likely to be an offspring of Midnight Miracles or a similar hybrid. There are probably quite a few as yet unregistered hybrids with Midnight Miracles as a parent being used as mass market plants, making it especially hard to try to identify this hybrid. Masai Splash, whatever it is, is not a registered hybrid.
Hybrids of this general type, and many other dark Oncidium intergenerics, get their color from Rhynchostele (Odontoglossum) bictoniense.

So, I did a bunch of homework. This one is commonly sold under the Masai Splash name, but the above post is correct. It's totally unregistered. Why someone failed to register it, I do not understand, because it is really gorgeous. It looks like this is a hybrid of Oncidium Midnight Miracles that was crossed back to one of the parents, which produced this really great white lip. That's the best I can find. Cool. The important thing is that care seems to be fairly standard for the alliance. Nothing too fancy. I have purchased a couple members of this alliance that require quite a bit more humidity than I can provide and they just don't thrive so I'm glad that's not the case with this one. Thanks for the info!

Got to love Trader Joes. I am doing some shopping down there tomorrow. I am running out of space for flowers so I think I will just buy food.
Pretty cool find.

I'm running out of space for orchids too. I actually just gave away a couple of my mini phals, due to space concerns and I have zero room on the Oncidium shelf. At least, I have zero room for now. I expect I am going to lose my Ada Aurantiaca. Not enough humidity for it and it's much too large to live in my terrarium. I may post another thread on it.

Now that is a beautiful flower! I'm trying to decide if it's a good thing or a bad thing that we don't have any Trader Joe's close by!
