My friend was given this and told it was a ground orchid. Looks like vanilla to me. What do you guys say?

It is a reed stem Epidendrum. They are grown outdoors in many warmer locations, usually in a prepared bed (= not plain garden soil).

I grow mine outside in my garden.
Sent their roots right into the soil.
