I am brand new to orchids, and by brand new I mean today, and my wife bought me this one but it was not marked and she got it from Home Depot.... Could someone tell me what kind it is? And any tips on care would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!
looks like an oncidium to me, I could be wrong though. check out the oncidium sub forum etc. for care tips or maybe some helpful person will post some here.
*Don't take my word for it* I'm new, and don't have anything similar. It looks like something in the oncidium alliance. I get oncidiums and cymbidiums confused though.
Check through some oncidium photos to compare maybe?
Don't worry, I don't think that Home Depot generally sells orchids that are difficult to care for. The first thing I would do is to check for holes at the bottom of the pot(s.) I'd also check to see how damp the media is.
It is definitely an Oncidium intergeneric hybrid. There are many similar hybrids, and a more specific identification will not be possible.
Detailed general care instructions for Oncidium should be easy to find, just google "oncidium care sheet" but for short term a few things are important...
Bright light, but no direct mid-day sun. An east window is good, but less light for a couple days won't hurt.
Make sure the pot has drainage holes. The potting mix must never stay soaking wet. Water well and let it drain, don't let it stand in water, then wait until the surface is dry before watering again. Over-watering kills more beginner's orchids than anything else, followed by under-watering.
Any temperatures you are comfortable with are fine. Avoid cold drafts and blasts of hot dry air from a heating system.
Relax and enjoy your orchid. It is an easy care type, and you've got time to learn specifics. After you've read a couple care sheets come back with any questions.
HD I know sells colmanaras on occasion. Ive seen no straight oncidiums there myself other than bag babies labeled 'dancing lady' which this is not. Not a very good pic of the flower but an intergeneric hybrid of oncidium no doubt.
