Can anyone ID this Vanda?
Default Can anyone ID this Vanda?

Hello everyone,

I just bought this Vanda at a trader that buys from orchid breeders but unfortunately do not know which Vanda it could be.

The colour is a nice antique pink and the petals are curly.

The plant grows quite dense and there are 5 plants in this pot at the moment.

Thank you for every hint which parents this Vanda could have or which one it is.

Best regards from Berlin, Germany :-)

At least 2 of the parents may be evident in this hybrid.

Euanthe (Vanda) sanderiana
Reasons why I think it is so:
1. The size of the plant.
2. The proportions of the petals to the lateral sepals and the way the lateral sepals angle themselves.
3. Many Vanda hybrids contain this species in their genetic line.

Vanda coerulea
Reasons why I think it is so:
1. The side lobes on the lip shows it may have remnants of the characteristic hooks that Vanda coerulea has.
2. The shape and shade of color of the lip resemble that of Vanda coerulea.
3. The overall shape of the flower resembles Vanda coerulea.

I'm not sure about these following plants, but I think I see Vanda javierae - (because of the elongated petals), Vanda denisoniana - (because of the reflexed petals), and Ascocentrum ampullaceum - (because of the pink).

Those are my opinions, I hope I'm somewhat close. Other than that, I don't know the specific name.

I apologize if I couldn't be more helpful, NOID's are just too hard to ID.

Rothschildiana is a hybrid (coerulea x sanderiana). From the color pattern, there is definitely sanderiana in the background.

Looking at the bark planter, I get the impression that this is a smallish growing plant. It would be helpfull to get the size of the plant, and to know whether the plants are 5 individual plants, or one plant with 5 stems (mother plant with 4 basal keikis).

I can't speculate any further based on what is known at this time.

Sorry, got confused.

I meant to say, Euanthe sanderiana.

Original post has been edited to reflect the correction.

Thank you for your fast answers! :-)

The plant is quite big, with 50-60 cm leaf span. The leafs are relatively broad. It is one plant with 5 stems, growth resembles V. tessalata. Do you know where the curly petals originate from?

My thought is that it has some V. tessalata in it.

It's entirely possible that V. tessellata could be in there too. A lot of Vanda hybrids have this species in their breeding as well. Again, without a name to trace, it's difficult to know unless genetic testing is done.
