Default I think this is an Ascocenda

Someone wrote that Ascocentrum and Ascocenda are no longer used as species but are now classified as Vanda, but I'm still going to use the older name. My niece's boyfriend's mother gave me this one today. It's not as spectacular as some of my others, but they still aren't blooming anyway. The main plant is about nine inches (about 23 cm.) tall and the leaves are only about half an inch wide. As an aside, this type of leaf is called "strap-leaf", right? Anyway, the flowers are about 1 inch across (about 2.5 cm.) The closest match I've been able to find so far is Ascocentrum garayi, but that has orange flowers. I went through all the Vanda pictures in the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia and couldn't find anything similar. Actually, all the Vandas seem to have narrower sepals and petals.

Very nice! Definitely seems to have some Ascocentrum influence in there somewhere.

It is a hybrid, and definitely with some Ascocentrum in it (could be either miniatum or curvifolium), more likely the latter based on the color.

There could be some Rhynchostylis in the background, but those hybrids tend to have shorter & broader leaves.

Why, yes it does. How nice. That's the first of my orchids that I've gotten a pretty solid ID on. Wonderful, that gives me a good start to finding out more about its ancestry. I hope some of the other vandaceous ones bloom so i can make a try at identifying them. One I think is a Vanda coerulea and another I suspect is a Rhynchostilis gigantea. I really wish I'd taken pictures of them when I got them.

it should have a light sweet fragrance to it also. I felt as though they smell like the goofy wax lips you used to buy for Halloween
