the one that got away
You all seem so sane. Does anyone but me get consumed with finding a particular orchid?
I let this one slip through my fingers and need to find another one so I can sleep. (kidding. mostly.)
I know it came from a seller in California, but she is strictly wholesale/retail.
Any ideas from the board?

I am always looking for my next tetraspis/speciosa. I have three, but I always want more! Good luck!

Oh man, sorry I can't help you with that but at the least I can guess that it's a species not a hybrid!
I'm learning that "sane" is a relative word. For me, Orchid growing/collecting is a bipolar adventure. You drive yourself crazy acquiring new Orchids, swearing every ten minutes you're not going to get anymore. Then once you do stop you sit back and wonder what the big deal was and why you just had to have that last batch... And then...and then and then and then for some time all you want to do is check and check and check some more, then post on OB, then go check and take pics, then post... then you get mad you spent so much time "on my Orchids!" so you chill out...for a little while...oh and it seems to be like this for every aspect...breeding, collecting, potting, repotting, "rescuing", checking, posting, etc...
Oh gosh, I got a little carried away...

Ok then I don't feel as bad now reading this. I have one orchid and it will hurt me if it dies. I want to save the keiki. Its a den and now I feel like I need to get another one to add in a different colour. So while one is in bloom I can care for the other and this way Il always get to admire the gorgeous flowers. But now I am so consumed at researching on orchids...lol. And I have it indoors and I keep passing ever so often and observing the roots to see any change as if it would happen suddenly. I'm sure if this plant can talk it would say 'just give me some space..geeze" lol.

What a gorgeous phal! I've done a search and can't find it. Does anyone know of a source for it?

I started to be like that at the very beginning, but I decided not to go OCD about it. I have a few that I want to get, but I also have other things going on in my life, and so priorities. What I'm doing now has high stakes and life changing things involved. Orchids do not.

I totally understand, Beth. I think that is part of the fun in this hobby, when you get you mind set on a certain plant you have to "hunt" for it. Sometimes, it does become consuming, but like optimist pointed out, as long as it's not getting in the way of your life the enjoy the "hunt".
By the way, I too am a huge fan of speciosa. I have seen them sold by Peter Lin of Big Leaf, Seattle Orchid and I know several ebay vendors put them up from time to time. Good luck finding your plant.

It reminds me of Phal tetraspis or speciosa (it seems there are question marks over whether these are one and the same thing).
It might not be, I'm not an expert in these by any means. The C1 clone of tetraspis/speciosa gives variable red, mine has one petal with a large spot on each flower (a different petal on each) just now. How much red depends on temps and light I'm told.
Unsure if yours is one of these showing a lot of red, or if it's something completely and utterly different
Moving this to the Identification section, maybe more people will be able to help there.

It certainly looks like the C#1 clone of speciosa. I would email Peter Lin at Big Leaf Orchids and see if he has any (don't see it listed, but he has lots of stuff that's not listed). I bought one from him two years ago.

Wow. This community, as it turns out, is the support group for we, the addicted/besotted I have always needed! Makes me feel newly sane; and sane, as you say....is RELATIVE and individual indigenous and not to be arrived at CAVALIERLY!
Could her mini Phal be a primary hybrid rather than a species? It's just gorgeous!
