New Den. What might it be?
Don't need a definite id. Just a guess to get me started is fine. I was avoiding dens, but when you see one you like at Trader Joe's it's kind of hard not to try one. I'm sure it's some sort of hybrid. I wish it had a tag. Also, it looks like it's planted in peat moss. When should I repot and is medium or large bark a good choice?
Thanks!

I haven't seen that one locally. Nice find.
For me personally I really like that mix. Works really well for thin rooted orchids. My dens ate doing great in it.
I do have one I repotted into bark. But it's very fine bark. They seem to do better with smaller media.
At least for me lol.

Thank you! There was a miltassia of some kind there too. I really wanted both. I may go back for it...
Good to know! I've always thought that peat was inappropriate for orchids, but I don't recall why. I've been neglecting my collection for a couple of months. I've had a lot of life things going on and that's actually done wonders for my orchids. Everything that wasn't growing new leaves, is now growing new leaves and I've got a rebloom happening on one of my mini phals. So if this den is fine in peat, then that's fine by me.
Do you grow yours in a slotted pot? This is potted in a terra cotta pot with a plastic liner inside that has a few drainage holes, but no holes in the sides. I have orchid pots I could put this in.

Get it. Lol.
I have a miltassia from them and it's one of my favorites.
They get huge though.
I think for a lot of orchids that mix would be death lol. But it does really well for some.
I think they pot things that like a pretty even moisture level, and don't need too much air circulation in that mix.
My nobile dens from them all came in bark, but my phal dens, and one antelope type came in that peat mix.
If I'm honest I haven't repotted most of them. They are just growing so great, plus I loathe potting, that I decided to keep them in the pots for one more year lol.
I do not. I reuse my pots from Trader Joe's.
Sometimes if I feel like the orchid needs more air. I'll cut slits or holes on the sides. But more often then not I'll just opt for a more airy potting mix.
But if you feel comfortable growing in orchid pots by all means go for it.

I've had good luck growing phals and oncidiums in orchid pots. This is my first den other than my cuthbertsonii, which I don't believe has the same care as the rest, so I'm willing to take all the advice I can get!

It looks to be a something in the Den Phal group with some influence from the Staghorn Den types. That's only very vauge though. Grow it like the Den Phalanthe group.
I would pot these in fine bark, or recently I've used Leca but I'm not having success just now with this group which might be down to the switch from fine bark to Leca (and might be un-related)

Glad to see you back, i was wondering what had happened to you. Very pretty orchid. Just my 1 cent but peat would make me nervous. I would think it would compact way to fast and not let air to the roots. But what do I know??????

It's been a busy couple of months for me! I've had a sick dog and my daughter adopted a cat without permission. Yeah, that's probably a topic for another thread.
I usually leave my TJ's orchids in whatever media they came home in until they are done blooming, then I repot them. I think I will go ahead and cut a couple of slots in the side of the plastic pot it's in for now and see what it does. I'll keep an eye on it.

Good luck!
Hahaha....
Twice in my life I've adopted cats with out my parents permission.
Just showed up at home with them.
One was an old angry declawed lady with back problems. She hated everyone.
I came home with her from the shelter when I was six. My neighbors brother helped me adopt her.
She ended up being one of the sweetest cats.
And four years ago I found two kittens on my way home from highschool.
My parents were thrilled.

Lol, this is starting to get off topic but be careful with what the cat can get at... My sister's orchid is a "rescue" at my place now cause her cats liked the orchid leaves a little too much...
