Question about an orchid label
Default Question about an orchid label

I recently received an Aerangis kirkii from a fellow OS member. She, in turn, obtained it from another member who didn't remember where he got it. The original label apparently read: Aerangis kirkii & out (or possibly, ...x out). The "& out" is the issue. I don't think it's a taxonomic phrase but can't think what else it could refer to, other than some sort of hybridizing or cultivation note. Anybody out there have a suggestion? I've been trying to think "outside the box" but haven't come up with anything.

An outcross - meaning it is the offspring of two A. kirkii from populations of plants originating from different seed capsules.

Within the population from the same capsule would be a "sibling" cross.

Thanks Ray. Should the label then read: Aerangis kirkii x out?

Ray's explanation sounds reasonable. As for what your tag should read...it's your choice...either is fine.

Personally, I would drop the "x out" and leave only the Aerangis kirkii. The outcross info would be of little importance to me since I didn't do the cross and it really isn't necessary on the label.

It might have been pertinent info for the person doing the cross...for his/her record keeping purposes...but I would think the simple "x out" has little value for anyone else.

Katrina: Thanks. After reading Ray's explanation, I was thinking it had more to do with personal record keeping than anything else. All anybody else cares about is that it's Aerangis kirkii.

Yep. I agree with Kat's and your take, as well.
