Given to me by a friend, who didn't know what it was. Sadly neglected by him, now offering me new roots. Has cylindrical leaves. Could anyone help me with identity.

Given you are in Australia...my first guess would be Den teretifolium. Den teretifolium is an Aussie native and that plant sure looks an awful lot like the plant I have. Of course, you'll have to wait for flowers unless your friend can confirm the ID because there are other terete leaved pendant types.

If D teretifolium....the native habitat is....
ORIGIN/HABITAT: Eastern Australia. The habitat extends from Bega in southeastern New South Wales to Rockhampton in southeastern Queensland. Plants generally grow on trees at low elevations, but they are occasionally found on rocks. They prefer high light in coastal gullies and river estuaries. The orchids are frequently found on trees overhanging water in creeks, lakes, or swamps. [courtesy of Orchid Wiz/Charles Baker]

I believe it's now called Dockrillia teretifolia. My parents called it the "bridal veil orchid". Mine flowered a couple of months ago (I'm in Brissie too) - it might have been August, perhaps early September. They smell great.

Nice name, by the way. A tribute to our glorious Origin team by any chance?

Cheers,
Aus.

"common names: Pencil Orchid, Bridal Veil Orchid
pencil orchid
Although the name Dockrillia was established as far back as 1981, it is only in recent years that the name has been resurrected. It refers to Alick Dockrill, a contemporary Australian orchidologist. The genus Dockrillia has been split off from Dendrobium and is made up of the orchids with more-or-less cylindrically shaped leaves. This revision has generally been accepted in Australia, but not always elsewhere. Many overseas orchidologists still know the plant by the synonym. Teretifolia is from the Latin teretus circular, and folium, a leaf."
Thank you for the heads up Katrina, Bolero and Aus. I am so glad it is one of our native orchids, grown here in Australia.
