The first one looks exactly like the IDed Epicattleya that I bought from Lowes in August. Mine was Epc. Charlie Brown.

I could be wrong and please correct me if this is the case, but the number of leaves and the typical Den lower leaf striations appear to be off on the pictured plant. Did any of your Epicattleya canes throw three or more leaves?

I'm both a lawyer and an orchid grower, I'm very, very pedantic, so please forgive me. Mainly for the lawyer thing. Pedantism is just my hobby. That and doing painfully tricky jigsaws.

Cheers,
Aus.

Howdy Apricot

Well, (to me, anyhow) the second is a grocery store dendrobium (read: common hybrid, no name sort).

The first appears to be cattleya alliance hybrid. Three leaves can come from aurantiaca, or any of several possible encyclia or epidendrum parents, or even broughtonia.

The pbulbs look like they might have been peeled, and seeing the bare pbulbs as they are is not alarming to me, including the vertical ridges -- complex hybrid genetics, or infrequent fertilizing, or any number of possibilities there.

It looks to have deficient roots, but catt family plants tend to be easy re-rooters when their cycle comes along. What I might suggest is place that plant bare-root into a small clay pot. Water it once in a while, and let it dry well between times. When it is obvious that it is putting out new roots, re-pot into your favorite mix with lotsa rocks, and large chunky stuff. It has lots of life left in it to start over for you.

Take care
Rex

I should be clear. The first pic looked like my epicattlyea (bifoliate), but looking at the pic again I can't tell if each bulb has three leaves or two leaves. If each bulb has three leaves then I retract the statement that it looks exactly like my epicattlyea and replace it with, " it looks similar to my epicattlyea."

I agree that the second pic looks like a dendrobium.
