Is this a Cattleya of some sort ?
Its a rather washed-out looking thing, very pale pink-purple with a faint yellow centre. Any thoughts ?

Does look like a Cattleya, can't help you more than that I'm afraid. I'm not an expert on these to be able to place it more than as a Cattleya.

Looks like a Brassocattleya. Brassavola x Cattleya.
I'd say Brassavola ( now Rhyncholaelia) glauca is one parent.

Beyond Cattleya alliance, it would be nearly impossible to identify with certainty.
On the bright side, it is blooming for you - always good, even if it is a NOID.

Thanks. Dad carefully recorded all the details for all his orchids on tags, all carefully written in felt pen. Now 5-10 years have passed and almost all the tags have faded to be illegible or completely blank .

No idea on an i.d, but here's a link to one of our members free info site, that he shows how to recover faded labels... Don't know if it would work for you, but it's worth a try! (His name is Ray, btw )

Thanks, I'll give that a go.
The article mentions using aluminium by cutting beer cans, etc into strips - dad used some plastic tags, the rest are old "slimline" venetian blinds cut into short lengths.

There are some nifty catt growers / breeders down under. As the plant recovers, and grows / blooms better, follow their catalogues, and I bet you can get an idea. Post them a picture, and they might be willing to help. Anyone at your local society to offer you advice??
Take care
Rex
