It was in a mix of lava rock and some kind of black rock that looked like huge chunks of activated carbon so I'm assuming that's charcoal.
I'm repotting it today, because one of the bulbs had a yellow-orange mushy spot on it, that I'm pretty sure was some kind of rot. So, I cut that and everything that felt even remotely mushy. After losing a hardware store orchid to rot that I thought I had prevented, and reading from another OB member that she made the mistake of not cutting enough as a newbie when attempting to save these orchids, I cut roots to the point where I felt that I'd cut more than I should. I figured this was probably closer to what it actually needed and it still had a good fist full of roots left when I was done.
It's air drying now, so we'll see if I can keep it alive. Poor baby.
