Can someone please identify this orchid for me so I can find out what type of planting medium to purchase for re-potting and the specifics of caring for it.

It's a dendrobium, phalanthe type. Also sometimes called a phal-den because it resembles phalaenopsis.

It prefers to be warm and should be watered year round. It likes a bit more light and moisture than the phalaenopsis, and my experience is that they prefer to be really pot-bound so use as small a pot as possible when you re-pot this one, even if the plant might be a bit top-heavy and unstable. Let it dry out between waterings. The roots will rot if the stay soggy wet for long.

Thank you so much! That was very helpful! And such a quick response!

I suspected that was what it is but I wasn't sure since none of the pictures I found had that tall of a stalk with so many leaves. The pot it is in is very light weight and it's definitely very top heavy. Right now it has no flowers but does have 2 new shoots coming out of the dirt. One is about 8 inches high and the other is just starting. I've had it since Mother's day and figured it probably needed to be re-potted. Is this a good time for that or should I just leave it alone for now. It seems fairly happy....except for not flowering at this time, which I figured is correct for this time of year in the south?? Really I'm at a loss with this. :/

I'm no dendrobium expert but I'm pretty sure that those new growths are where your next blooms will come from. If it's actively growing and happy, NOW would be the time that I'd repot.

Maybe someone else with more experience with them can chime in!

Yes, a Dendrobium in the Phalanthe sub-group.

The new shoots should grow up tall and then flower, but flower spikes do occasionally come from the older growths as well.
