Two more for identification - any ideas ?
Default Two more for identification - any ideas ?

Well, I have brought a few more orchids home from my father's place, and again have no idea what they are.

Any thoughts ? The white one has flowers about 1" across and is quite "fragrant". The other is small (its in a 4" pot) and the flowers come out the bottom of the bulb. I'm not sure if the flowers will stay "curled over" or if they are still opening, I only found it in dad's garden today so not sure how long its been in bloom.

Thanks in advance !

1. Coelogyne don't know the species yet. Will get back with you on this one.

2. Maxillaria picta.

I'd have to agree after looking at the photos of Coelogyne flaccida on the web.

There are plenty more, dad's house goes to its new owners in 23 days so I have to get everything home by then.

My problem is that I know so little about orchids, I can't even get to the "its a coelogyne of some sort" stage and then google from there.

I did manage to identify one today, but only because dad gave me one years ago - a rock lily (Dendrobium speciosum).

My own C. flaccidas are flowering right now so the timing fits perfectly for Australian growers. To me the defining test is whether the blooms smell like fresh cow urine. No, I'm not joking. We used to have cattle. Which may explain the inverted commas you put around the word "fragrant"...

You'll love to hear that the dear old Dendrobium speciosum is now probably known as Thelychiton speciosus:

Dendrobiums to Thelychitons

The name changes are being strongly resisted by certain breeders but you never know, the changes may stick.

I defer to others on the second orchid - no idea at all.

Cheers,
Aus.

I've never got that close to cows (except at BBQ's ....)

The smell is unusual, its neither really pleasant or really unpleasant. It is quite strong though. Our cat thought so too, tried to eat it.

I have never thought cow urine smelled particularly unpleasant, just something that has to happen. Powerful, but not what one would describe as an 'endearing' perfume, the C. flaccida...

I shall have to see if my cat wants to broaden her diet too - great idea, I will bring one in for her and see how she gets on with it. She leaves some plants alone but tends to particularly go for grass-like orchids like Maxillarias a lot. She wants to eat the leaves. I'd like to see if the flaccida scent has any effect.

Nice to meet another grower in the same (perhaps roughly) seasonal flowering zone as me. Best of luck, happy to help out with suggestions or possibly names where I can, but as I have an awful lot to learn this latter offer may not be of much use to you.

Cheers,
Aus.
