phalaenopsis ID help. Is it a hybrid or spices?? Male
Default phalaenopsis ID help. Is it a hybrid or spices??

Heyy

The other day I went to the store and cane a crossed a strange looking orchid. Its a phalaenopsis I can see that but the pedles on the flowers look different than my other phalaenopsises. The pedles are ruffled and and in the middle of the pedles ur a weard looking spoke looking thing.

My questis are:
Is it a hybrid or not??
And what characteristics are the weard looking pedles from.

PS: The plant didn't come with a tag.

Thank you all for all the help!!

It's most likely a hybrid.
From the description I'll take a guess and say it might be peloric.
Well find out when you post that picture!

Yes, most likely a hybrid unless it was in a specialist orchid store.

It sounds to me like it might be peloric as well. This is a mutation (a nice one in many cases) where the petals start to resemble the lip to a greater or lesser extent. Most of the time they don't look much like the lip at all, though I have seen ones with three perfect looking lips. Usually it just causes the petals to hold closer to the center and not look like the sepals. (Usually an orchid has a lip, two petals and three sepals. In many orchids including phalaenopsis the petals usually look the same as the sepals. The sepals form the outer surface of the bud as it develops, in other non-orchid flowers this will usually die back but in most orchids it forms part of the flower.)

See my explanation above of peloric. Basically it's a mutation, in many cases considered a desirable one by some people.
