Can someone decipher this name for me?
My niece bought an orchid at Lowes, in one of the "self watering pots", or whatever they call them, and it did have a name tag on it, but I am unsure of what a couple of things mean. It is a phal. the tag reads, " Dtps.Fullers Sunset, (mericlone). 9/20/11, and then it has the color, yellow w/red lip. I appreciate any feedback on this!

Dtps is a hybrid of Phalenopsis and Doritis. These plants have Phal like blooms on upright spikes. The number could be just the date of the tissue culture (mericlone), I assume.

I found it in Orchid Wiz as Dtps. Fuller's Sunset. Recently, Doritaenopsis, was renamed to Phalaenopsis. The pic on OrchidWiz is quite nice and matches your description. I'd say your niece selected well!

Thank you for your replies. To clear up my confusion, is this a new type of phal, or are all phals originally the doritanopsis? Yes, I think she did choode weel. she repotted it and it had really nice roots so it should do well!

Dtps is a cross of Phal and Doritis. The genus Doritis has been reclassified as Phalaenopsis. So, they are all just Phalaenopsis now

Doritis was a genus with only one species in it. That species was crossed many times with Phalaenopsis species and hybrids and the resultant intergeneric genus name was called Doritanopsis.
That one species has since been reclassified as Phalaenopsis and so the genus of Doritis no longer exists. As a result the genus of Doritanopsis also no longer exists because all it's hybrids are not just Phalaenopsis. Unless they were primary or fairly simple crosses you really couldn't tell them apart from Phals anyway. You still find them tagged as Dtps though, one of mine is and I've never got around to changing the tag.

Here is a link to Doritis pulcherrima (now Phal pulcherrima). I think there are various colours (varieties) of it. I've seen a lot of pink photos as well.

Dammit all!!! So my Doritis pulcherrima, or rather, my 8 or so of them, are now Phal pulcherrima. (Those basal keikeis add up over time.) I do wish these people would stop changing their minds.
Ah well. Just have to change the tags I guess.
Cheers,
Aus.
