That light that makes everything look so dim in the photo is actually a dual t5ho fixture... I'm not sure if that helps they light issue though...

Spathoglottis plicata ought to do well outside in the Miami area, though from what I've read they readily naturalize and become invasive in tropical climates. Here's a link with more information including culture: Spathoglottis plicata. Doesn't sound like they need a ton of light, so the issue with your friend's plant (though it looks healthy to me) may be something else like inadequate nutrition.

That pictures from when he bought it lol.. I don't know what condition it's currently in I just know it's "struggling".
I also think it's potted but I'll let him know about the invasive thing.
