Phal parentage? Female
Default Phal parentage?

Hi, I'd like to know the parentage for Phal. Happy King 'Pine Ridge 2' - I tried searching in the International Orchid Registry online but it didn't come up with a match. I was hoping someone with OrchidWiz could help me out?

Thanks!

The International Orchid Register / RHS Gardening

It is here in the International Orchid registry. Not sure why it didn't come up for you.

Huh, weird. Maybe it's because I added the 'Pine Ridge' at the end? Is it the same thing without it?

Phal. Happy King is the name of the hybrid made by the two parent plants. The 'Pine Ridge' is one plant of this cross that was given the cultivar name. Usually when they are awarded and then only clones of that particular plant can have that name added to it. So you don't add the part in quotes when searching.

As silken has said, the part of the name in quotes is a cultivar name and identifies a particular plant and it's clones. It's not part of the grex/hybrid name.

This is why it's important to pay attention to the way a name is written, whether it has capitals (lower case is used for species, upper case first letter is us brackets, quotes etc. All those things tell you something about what the name means and can be confusing if you don't understand it, and if someone writes it incorrectly when you do understand it. Take a look at this link for more information about how orchid names are written and what it means. This link also talks about italics having a meaning but that one is often missed out by many people.

knowing the cultivar is also essential when doing breeding as some are known 4N plants, some are not.
