Lost with new reedstem Epidendrum purchase! Female
Default Lost with new reedstem Epidendrum purchase!

So I just made my weekly trip to the grocery store, and I saw an unusual orchid that I couldn't leave behind! The generic tag just said "Epidendrum," but I'm wondering about the care for this orchid. I've never heard or seen of one like it, so naturally, I had to take it home with me!

When I got home and did some research, I was a little nervous because it seems like they need a lot of light, and I don't know if I'll be able to provide enough with my North facing window. I did, however, read about them doing well outdoors, so that is my plan B. I had a Dendrobium last year that didn't survive (I think because of the low light), so I'm hoping this one will not have the same fate.

Any growing advice would be appreciated... it's a large plant (at least 3ft tall), and it seems to be in good condition with lots of strong roots. Sorry for the blurry pictures...

The standard epidendrum 'crucifix orchid' grows absolutely crazy in dappled shade in peoples gardens around here, I live on the sth coast of NSW in Aus, about 200km south of Sydney. If yours is anything like the ones around here it will do fine outdoors. Our winter temps get down to freezing and summer temps up to 40 degrees to give you an idea.

You may put it outdoors if there is no frost....if the temperatures outside are freeezing then put it indoors....
These can grow taller and in five years it may become a thick cluster....
weekly weakly fertilizer and in warmer months water twice a week making sure the keikis on the spikes gets sprayed too
