I am very much a beginner with orchids and have had only two orchids for the past 5+ years. This one I bought on the clearance rack at Home Depot and I have no idea what it even is anymore. I recall that it had small (.5cm) brown and yellow flowers at the time.

You might notice that my cat knocked it over and broke the pot but I'm now working on a new terrarium as you can see and will be saving both orchids with better care.

I need to know what this one is to understand the growing conditions needed.

I'd go for it to be a Phalaenopsis.
The cat did fix it up didn't it.
It ould be an Ex cat around here.

See those round thin things towards Te base of the leaves? Those look like pseudo bulbs to me which would indicate something in the Oncidium family. Also, is that dirt you have it potted in? It looks awefully fine like dirt which would be a no-no for orchids (except terrestrial species which this does not look like to me).

Can you post a picture of the bloom and or hold a leaf up and capture the entire structure of the plant above ground? Also let us know what it's potted in because appropriate potting medium is key to success.

Yes they are definitely pseudo bulbs. I just snapped this photo with my phone but will get a much better one this evening.

The soil is just compacted orchid mix from the Depot. Once I get the plant group, I'll read up on the conditions and adjust the potting medium. In fact I plan on repotting both my Phal. and this one once I fig out what it is.

BTW, I've read through your terrarium posts and find them very helpful. My Phal. will definitely like my terrarium, but this one? Who knows.

Just be careful with Phals in terrariums! If water gets into the crown of the plant (the very top area where the leaves come from) they are highly susceptible to rot and killing the plant. The other orchid would probably do better in the terrarium. There are ways you can try to prevent Phal crown rot, but as someone new to Orchids I'd just pot the Phal up and be done while you learn about proper care.
