Shu Long Black Jack?
Default Shu Long Black Jack?

I contacted the grower that sold my orchid to the store where I bought it, and he said the name is 'Shu Long Black Jack'. So I wanted to find out if anyone else has heard of this one. It IS very similar to 'Dtps. I Hsin Black Jack', but with more edging, so I'm thinking it could be related...

Default A NOID no more!

Well, after some more inquiring of the seller, and some research of the breeders he named, I've verified the parentage, with photos! It's sold by I-Hsin Biotechnology, and is a product of P. Zuma's Pixie × I-Hsin Spot. (I'm virtually certain the one is I-Hsin Spot Eagle "Montclair", as the thick, waxy flowers it is noted for are quite prominent in my orchid).

Mwilson, This cross is not officially registered with RHS as of yet. You can search for yourself here:

The International Orchid Register / RHS Gardening

If you go to the Ihsin website (link here)

IHSIN BIOTECHNOLOGY INC.-ORCHID?FLASK?PLANT?PHALAENOPSIS?MERICLONE?NURSERY-ProductDetail

They just list the parents used for the cross, usually a good indication as well that it has not been named.

Often times a seller or his supplier will give their own name to crosses to make them more sellible, its a very common occurance with plants coming from Taiwan.

You can always try contacting IHsin directly to aquire the name if one has been given to this cross recently.

BTW: very pretty blooms you have there!

Judi

Forgot to add that this name could also be a provisional name from IHsin that just has not been accepted yet by the RHS!

I kinda figured the name was the sellers invention, but at least the parentage is verified. I guess that leads to the obvious next question: If it's not registered, then is it still not worthy for breeding? I figured now that I have a "pedigree", it's better than a NoID...

Well, I contacted I-Hsin growers about registry, and it is being applied for! This was their response:

Hello Mary

Thank you for your mail.

This orchid we are preparing the document for applying The International Orchid Register.

We will let you know as soon as possible, if we got any response from RHS.

Best Regards,

Dawn Chien
