Is this Phalaenopsis fasciata?
Hi all,
A member of our local orchid society has been given several of these plants and has kindly offered to infect me with YAP - I rather like this one!
She sent me this picture (attached to post); to me it looks most like Phalaenopsis fasciata, but I am not very familiar with species in this group, nor do I have any books that adequately cover the species.
The flowers are apparently approximately 4cm across.
Can anyone confirm this ID or suggest another more accurate one?
Thanks!

I checked in one of my Phal books, and it does look like fasciata.

I'm quoting our society's Phal. guru;
Quote:
"Doesn't look like a fasciata to me. Looks like a hybrid of maybe Phal Yardstick (fasciata X hieroglyphica) or Spica (fasciata X lueddemanniana). "
|
That would explain why many see the fasciata in it.

It does look quite a bit like Spica - Phalaenopsis Spica
but Yardstick looks too pale and unpatterned. Phalaenopsis Yardstick
Thanks for the feedback/ideas all

She added this note;
Quote:
I also looked in my Christenson book. Lip is DEFINITELY not a typical fasciata and the markings are very concentrated.

Thanks Chryss - I'm definitely leaning toward Spica at the moment; the colour on the lip/column as well as the petals/sepals and the overall shape seems to match (at least, to my non-botanical, non-phal trained eyes!).
Of the primary hybrids, Spica definitely seems to match best out of those available here: Phalaenopsis fasciata primary hybrids
