You are mostly correct when trying to ID a plant, however, there are those species and hybrids that are so obviously identifiable and different from any other that the general rule gets tossed out the window. As to not being able to show it, if you feel comfortable with the ID I see no problem with Showing it, however, if I weren't 100% sure, I would never use it to breed with. One more thing, just because a plant has a label doesn't mean that it is the plant listed on the label.

So probably it would be good to ask at the club what's acceptable?

Hmmm, that would bring forward the date I'd first be able to show! (I know my local says you have to have had a plant for a year...) I have a 95% identified noid that might be eligable and flowering in a few months!

I can't think of a single society that I have dealt with that sticks to their lenght of ownership timetable. Basically they don't want someone buying plants specifically for a show. I can think of situations where society members who were putting in a display had to buy a plant or two to make the color flow better and then had that plant pulled for AOS judging and I have seen Judges that will buy a plant on the morning of judging and enter it to be judged an win an award.

This seems a little controversial.
My society seems to be in "the more the merrier" category. We are far from any big city although we have a surprisingly large and active group.
I've been told I could enter a plant for ribbon judging that I bought that morning. Other than the cultural awards, "it's the plant, not the owner" that gets the awards.
