Two oncidium intergenerics...
Default Two oncidium intergenerics...

My new 'kids' from last week. They smelled so good I had to bring them home. My apartment is full of their fragrance now!

The yellow one seems like some type of wild cat variety, but I could be wrong. have no idea what it is.
Please let me know if anyone owns the same one and has its name.
Its fragrance is so strong all day and night that I put it in the bathroom. Two of the pbs have one spike on each.

The second one is definitely a variety of Sharry Baby. It's just that I've never seen this color form before. Personally I think red fantasy is prettier (they are both very similar to each other with the frilly edge on the petals and scent and everything), but there's something very appealing about those dark brick red brown flowers.
Scent is very sweet but not strong enough to fill up a room. Two pbs have two spikes on each.

The only thing I'm concerned about is that those dreaded dark spots on the leaves might potentially harm my collection....I have trimmed at least five leaves on each. could be fungus, ring spot virus, or just normal. oh, well...

The plant size is the same. They are bigger than yellow dancind lady but smaller than gigantic Sharry Baby.

Beautiful! If the dark spots look like black little freckles, this is normal for Sharry Baby and some other Oncidiums, just little sun spots.

I know, but it's not. I don't have pictures of it, but they are dark brown dots rather than black freckles.
Also, there are light green or yellowish halo around those spots. So I'm suspecting fungus or virus.

It seems pretty common on these intergenerics as virtually all of them have those spots. They all have wonderful flowers, so I don't know if I should really be worried too much about it but I'm just concerned if it is something that other orchids in my apartment might pick up. Anyway, this should be posted seperately under disease section as my post is really about identification.

Great looking plants, and the spikes are enormous!! I wouldn't worry about the spots, Oncs tend to develop spot easily, usually from water on the foliage or such, and in your case it was probably at the grower's that it happened. Don't worry, and enjoy the blooms!

Great looking Oncs!

I'm afraid I can't help on the spots. Mine get the freckling usual on this and I've had odd spots that have not spread or caused further problem like Camille says, but I'm not sure if that's all you have or something more worrying.

Ah yes, the halo spots. 'Tis fungus, but won't usually spread if you're careful. My Oncidiums seem to get these sometimes if I get the foliage wet. It stinks, makes me feel like I'm watering a Phal, having to be so careful. I still get the leaves wet sometimes, but I try not to. I trim off damaged leaves, or parts of leaves, unless it's tiny and isn't spreading.

Hi! If my ID's of two noids are correct I have a Wildcat sitting in my kitchen, and gave my mum a Jungle Monarch. I think yours is much more likely to be the latter or closely related. My Noidus Wildcat has larger flowers and is not scented. Noidus Monarch has large numbers of small, scented flowers. Looking at pictures on the web your plant doesn't look to have the right flower shape for the common clone of Monarch (Everglades). I did find an offspring of Monarch called Burrageara Jungle Moss 'Rainforest' that looks similar, but again I wouldn't say spot on.

Hi, Camille!

You are right. They had those spots at the store. I always examine leaves and all other parts of plants I buy very carefully for potential disease signs or pests.
Both of these had quite a few spots that looked to me like fungus or virus, but they were soooo attractive and wonderfully scented that I had to get them. They are something that I haven't seen before so I really want to keep them in my collection but I am concerned about what those spots really are. I am thinking of sending some leaf samples to get tested.
I tossed a few oncidium hybrids that displayed those dots and they were something I could order from online stores anytime, so letting go was rather easy.

Do those dots on your plants have lighter edge like a halo around the spots? I trimmed off the ugly parts the day I bought these, but I noticed that they are slowly spreading into healthier portion of the leaves.

I will spray physan 20 tomorrow. I just have to be careful not to hurt the flowers though.

Thank you for the input. Yeah, the monarch has much sharper and narrower petals. Jungle Moss is rounder like mine, but it is still a different plant.
I wish growers did a better job keeping name tags in place. lol
I will just call mine sweet yellow because it has a wonderful sweet scent to it.

About half of the orchids don't have fragrance. They are mostly phalaenopsis and paphiopedilums. I still like them because most of them look beautiful and they tend to have long lasting blooms.

Almost all my dendrobiums and oncidium hybrids are wonderfully scented, and they look pretty as well.
