It's definitely in the Cattleya alliance, that's as close as I can get. Really nice one you have there even if you never learn it's name !

Thanks Chryss and Ron. Is "alliance" the same as "genus"? Or is Cattleya not a genus? Can you recommend a basic text or web page that sorts out the terminology?

I have an LC Purple cascade "fragrant beauty" that looks like that. Is it fragrant?

Cattleya is the genus and alliance means a group of genera (plural of genus) that are related and can cross breed with each other. The Cattleya alliance includes Laelia, Epidendrum, Brassavola, and others.

It is very likely Purple cascade, because it is a pretty common one. I love the fragrance but I wish the flowers lasted longer. I've been spoiled by vandas and other long lasting orchids.

So, I take it that alliance members can interbreed naturally. But can a sophisticated grower hybridize them with other genera not in the alliance?

Mine was given to me on 01 Dec, in full flower, which it remains till now, very robust and colorful. How long do you think it will stay in bloom?
