Orchis mascula vs. Anacamptis morio (sweden)
Default Orchis mascula vs. Anacamptis morio (sweden)

Hey everybody!
Recently I was on Öland (Sweden) where I was watching birds, but I also took some pictures of Orchids I came across. I managed to identify most of them, but there is still some Im not certain about.

- Are picture 1, 2 and 3 colour variations of Orchis mascula?
- Are pictures 4, 5 and 6 Anacamptis morio?
- Is picture 7 an Orchis mascula or an Anacamptis morio?

Im new to the forums, so be gentil pls

Thanks already!

Welcome to Orchid Board

I love seeing wild orchids like this. Such great things.

I'm not an expert and can't really tell anything from the pics. The first pic though reminds me of something in the Dactylorhiza genus which grows wild in Europe and the UK. I could be wrong though as I can't see the detail of the flowers and as I said, I'm not an expert.

Hopefully someone will come along with more knowledge than me.

MUCH BETTER pix !! Didn't want to say anything but the first ones were like from a cell phone camera and very lacking in quality !

I love the windmill in the background of #7 !!!

I do have knowledge on native orchids, but mainly those found in the french alps. I've seen Orchis mascula before, but I'm not sure if that it. Hard to tell without close up shots of the blooms as there are many species that look similar. I'll try looking in my guide of European Orchids though.

There are not of EU people here with knowledge of native orchids. I had a look in my European orchids book, and think you may have gotten the right ID. I am fairly certain that 2 is O.mascula, and that you have the correct ID for A. Morio (the greenish striping on the flowers is typical), but I can't be certain about the other pics. But with so many orchids that look similar, close up pics of blooms are usually necessary to check if the details match up for the species. I'm also not familiar with the orchids that grow up there. Isn't there a local orchid society that could help you? I know that in France the societies do a lot of activities with our native orchids, if may be the same where you are.
