You are absolutely correct Makuli and Maudiae are hybrids and curtisii is a species.

To your second question - the award given to that certain plant becomes part of it's lineage. I don't understand what you mean by losing prestige. Are you referring to the fact that the new cross has a name that doesn't reflect visually it's parents award? I have plants in which all of it's lineage is awarded even though the plant itself hasn't been. That doesn't in any way demean the lineage or make my plant any better or worse for that matter.

The way I understand your explanation is that a plant named Paph. Hsingyin Majakun is Janet Knuckle x Paph. Maudiae may not have an award winner in its lineage, because it may have been bred from a different Paph Maudiae with no award winner in its parentage.


So given two identical looking plants, one labeled Paph. Hsingyin Majakun, and one specifying an award winner in its background, wouldn't it be preferred to buy the plant with Paph. Maudiae 'Napa Valley' in its background?

(Paph Makuli X curtisii) has been named Paph. Memoria Allegria Gutierrez. When you cross that with Paph Maudiae you get Paph. Janet Kunkle. When you cross that with (Paph Maudiae 'Napa Valley' x sib), (which actually is still only Paph Maudiae), you wind up with Paph. Hsinying Majakun. The only name that you need have on your plants tag. The original cross was made with an awarded Maudiae 'Napa Valley' HCC/AOS. The cross could be remade by someone using an non-awarded Maudiae or a more highly awarded Maudiae and it would still be Paph Hsinying Majakun.

Unfortunately at this point in time, noone keeps track of the clonal name, var, fma or color variation used in a cross. Of course it behooves the hybridizer to list the parentage of a cross after it has been named if the parentage is awarded, the theory being that better quality parents will produce better quality offspring, but that is not always the case. Both parents even if they have an FCC/AOS could both have recessive genes that could potentially produce nothing but dogs as offspring.

Just like humans, no matter how beautiful a couple may be, that does not guarantee that they will have beautiful children, even with twins one could be attractive and one could be down right ugly.
