how big is this one? I have a small reed-stem epidendrum, lost the tag, it hasn't bloomed yet for me, but the growth habit looks the same

Yeah, its a reed stem Epidendrum hybrid. It isn't possible to make a more precise ID, there are too many too similar hybrids. It isn't uncommon to grow them in the ground in Florida so the soil media isn't surprising.

It is a reed stem epidendrum. I don't know if it's true for all of them but at least some varieties are self seeding. I have one that looks like yours and it has seed pods all over the place.
