I can't be sure, my guess would be that the plant is a Laelia (L) x Cattleya ? - does it say this on a tag ?

Thanks, that sounds familiar. Yes, the tag has only the initial "L". (L x C) is what I will go with.

So all of these L Catt's are actually hybrids; interesting.

yes, it's a hybrid - tho any cross is a hybrid, even if the parents are both the same genus.
