I got this for free and I never saw an orchid like this, is this even an orchid?

Looks like Ludisia discolor, which is a jewel orchid. Or is could be some other similar jewel orchid, I don't know this group very well. These are grown more for their foliage than their blooms, although those are nice as well.

I agree it is probably Ludisia discolor. Other jewel orchids are similar but usually have more distinct net-like markings on the leaves rather than these simpler stripes.

I would vote for Ludisia discolor as well.

They really don't look like orchids do they! They grow like suculents in many ways and are pretty tolerant of most conditions.

Mine grow in a mixture of potting compost, with a small amount of fine bark and perlite added.

If the leaves start getting paler it's usually an indication that the light is too high. These like a reasonable amount of shade.
