Oncidium flexuosum??
Default Oncidium flexuosum??

Bought this one along with a number of other unmarked orchids from a local nursery when the business changed hands. I believe it is a species: Oncidium flexuosum.

I can't help with the ID of your plant, but it is very pretty I really like the vivid yellow.

I don't think it's flexuosum because the shape of the part just above the 'skirt' is wider with more yellow and the very top part is also pattened differently.

It's possible it's just variation but it actually reminds me more of my 'Sweet Sugar' hybrid although I'm not sure if that is a registered name for it.

I've got a feeling that it's one of those cases that you can never be sure what it is even if you find ones that look similar.

Oncidium flexuosum??
Default yes, sweet sugar

I think you are correct. I googled oncidium sweet sugar and the images are closer than the flexuosum. (I mistakenly labeled the image "sweet baby" instead of sweet sugar)

This is a common hybrid in the UK (and the site you have found the picture on is a UK site) but I'm not certain it is registered as a hybrid (it's not on the RHS register) and so could be a trade name.

That being the case I'm not sure if it's a hybrid you would find in the USA and yours could be something slightly different. It can be difficult to tell even when the flowers look similar.

As it's not registered I don't know what the parents are but because of it's close similarity to flexuosum I wonder if that is one of the parents and it could also be one of the parents of yours even if yours is not the same hybrid as mine.

Thanks alot for your input! I think getting this close is probably enough for me. When the spike and early buds appeared I originally thought I might have a Brassia, so calling her Oncicium Sweet Sugar is much more accurate than that!

I have the plant mounted on a piece of local oak bark and the roots are like Phyllis Diller's hair..........shooting straight out in every direction. The roots really don't adhere to the mount too readily but the plant is REALLY healthy.

4 more NOIDs to go......NOID "A", NOID "B", NOID "C" and NOID "D".......waiting to have their labels changed........

CJ, I can't find that listed on the RHS register. Where did you find it?

It's really good to know the parents at last anyway. Mine is a poor pathetic mis-treated plant but I still have hopes for it's survival.

I think the identification is correct. RHS has this as Gomesochilum Sweet Sugar. Apparently 'Oncidium' species in the background of this hybrid have been reclassified as Cyrtochilum or Gomesa.

Thanks PaphMadMan, I saw the Gomesochilum Sweet Sugar but hadn't realised it was the same thing. Good to know

[Edit] Just taken a look and RHS does say Oncidium Sweet Sugar is a synonym of Gomesochilum Sweet Sugar. [/Edit]
