any idea on what the best media would be to grow this little guy? i hear they grow in the ground, but i found this one on a downed pine tree next to a Staghorn..

For medium, almost anything will do although avoid things that stay wet to long as for any orchid. A standard orchid medium as used for Phaleanopsis should be fine.

That was probably me- that page is the best reference I've found online for Reed-stems.
Wish I could find orchids in my yard.
I think you'll be really pleased with that guy- tough as nails, Reed-stems are. Particularly radicans and ibaguense. Once acclimated, they thrive in full sun and heat that would cook other orchids, as well as near-freezing temperatures. And they're not picky at all about soil quality, so repotting is rarely a problem.
