I have my reed stem epis now in chc mix, but have also used bark. The first I tried first in regular potting mix since I was told that was fine for them - It was not happy! Then I tried a mix for terrestrial orchids - still wasn't happy. Finally put it in bark mix for orchids and it finally appeared reasonably happy.

sweet guys. thanks for all the info.
i think i'll keep it where it is for now.
it was on the fallen pine tree, with it's roots going under the decomposing bark on the underside of the tree. i never even knew it was there until i saw the almost 3 feet tall spike topped with flame colored flowers sticking straight up. i carefully took it off the old tree and broke up the bark it was on into a manageable sized mix. it's shooting out new roots, a new spike, and seems happy so far..

Hi Jason, I have an epi exactly the same as that and it's virtually unkillable!

It's also very prolific, throws out new shoots and keiki's left right and centre!

I have epi's (all but one are noids) in lilac, white, red, orange and deep pink and they are growing in all sort of media and levels of light. Epi's can take full sun, even in our Ozzie summer as long as they are well watered.

I have they growing in the ground under a mulberry tree and under a ficus, these get quite a bit of dappled shade. I have them in hanging baskets on the edge of my patio, which gets almost full sun. I also have them in pots under shade cloth which is about 50% shade. They all flower well and throw lots of keiki's which I usually pot up and give to friends.

I have them in soil, in coarse orchid medium and in potting compost and they all are thriving. I think it's because they know I love them...hehehe
