Unidentified Dendrobium (in bud??)
Default Unidentified Dendrobium (in bud??)

Hi all

I have adopted a Dendrobium which I thought was speciosum. But have found small buds coming from the top of the canes. I haven't noticed other Den. Speciosum doing this.

Does anyone know what these might be? And are the buds leaves, spikes or other?

Also looks like the past owner left this in the hot sun. Should i cut off the damaged leaves??

I have recently repotted which was the subject of an earlier post. The buds have become noticable since repotting.

Regards

John

The damage is cosmetic and does not appear to be severe. Let the plant decide. If the leaf dies it will fall off naturally. Most likely it will hold on to that leaf for a long time. This has been my experience with Dendrobiums. Also, they don't like wet feet. If your cultivating this one ouside make sure it's planted in an airy medium.

Hi John,
My speciosum buds just like yours, though last year it showed buds that waited until this Spring to bloom.

Thanks guys

Laura

Excuse my ignornace, but are these buds going to form flower spikes? My speciosums usually only flower from the centre of the canes.

Thanks

John

John, I think you must be confused about the plant that you think is a speciosum...
Attached are the photos of mine and they branch out with a spike full of flowers.

Thanks Laura

The Den. speciosum in my garden is the Australian native (Dendrobium speciosum), now called Thelychiton speciosus. (Thelychiton speciosum, Dendrobium speciosum - Growing Native Plants)

As you can see this one flowers from the centre of the cane. So this is why I'm confused.

Anyway perhaps both are Den. Speciosum but flower differently. Perhaps I'm right off track.

Cheers again

John

Now I understand what you mean...I think they are both speciosum, just that the ones that I have seen bloom from the center and also from any of the leaf joints., and it appears that your newest one is diong the same thing.
