Orchid ID please, Very fragrant!
Default Orchid ID please, Very fragrant!

I was recently given an orchid for taking care of a friends house while they were away on vacation. The orchid fills our living area with a wonderful scent, perhaps coconut. I'm wondering about the type of orchid and tips on care. I live in Hawaii, and have had good luck with dendrobiums.

Mahalo,

Welcome to OB!

It looks and sounds like Maxillaria tenuifolia.

Hello and welcome to the OB.
I also agree it's a Maxillaria tenuifolia, they have a nice coconut fragrance and I want one!

There is also a hybrid that looks like that. Max tenuifolia x sanguineum. Supposedly smells different. Breeder says 'toasted coconut' instead of the regular coconut.

To me tenuifolia smells like vinyl car seats that sunbathers have sat in. Not entirely sure it is a fragrance for me, but everybody's sniffer is a bit different.

That was my first thought. It looks too dark to be straight tenuifolia.
