Yellow Cattleya NOID - Any IDeas?

Hi all,

Hubby and I just became in charge of the local Botanic Gardens Orchid collection - essentially inventory, id (if possible), catalogue, and repot for better care.

They have been without someone for the orchids for a LONG time so this is a massive effort for 2 volunteers.

Anyway, I am off to a good start having already id'd

Vanda Patricia Low - tag had just enough information to search the name on RHS.

Oncidium leucochilum or Oncidium ochmatochilum or Oncidium reichenheimii or Oncidium stelligerum (we know it is a species because it was (willed) by a species only collector) we are still debating it.

Anyway, I know there is really no chance in a million that I can id this Cattleya but maybe someone might recognize it? It is an older cross and has been in the collection since the early eighties (I think).

The column is really distinct as it is 2" long and really frilly/hairy. It has an overwhelming scent of musky perfume (best I can describe).

Any IDeas?

well it looks like one parent is B. digbyana....from the frilly lip....

It is certainly a hybrid of Rhyncolaelio digbyana (it has been moved to its own family).

Digbyana is white so it is highly unlikely to be a species and natural yellow. If it were it would be a desired breeding plant. Without a history it can not longer be used for hybridization.

It is probably a primary hybrid as digbyana. The frilly lip does not carry well to its off spring.

There were over 330 primary hybrids of digbyana 4 years ago so ID will be hard if not impossible.
