Help identify Phalaenopsis with partially-opening flowers
Default Help identify Phalaenopsis with partially-opening flowers

Received this plant as a "rescue" so don't know where it came from. Wondering if anyone can help ID possible parents and whether the partially-opening flowers are a genetic trait or a symptom.

Thanks!

Welcome to OB!

I have no clue to what it is. I think it might be genetic. Nice color combination.

its a peloric noid

Peloricisme is a gene defects, where the flower returns to a more primitive form in which the three petals are similar, by this i mean the lip shape is repeated. There are many different degrees, ranging from sepaler only takes over the color of the lip to the 3 exactly for lips. Sometimes there are even 3 flower clubs out of it, but they is always sterile ...

Smile Partially opening flowers

I bought one recently (on ebay) which is almost identical to yours. I didn't realise that the flowers would not open fully and the seller told me after, that it was an unusual collectible mericlone and was highly sought after. I still prefer the fully opening type though.

Without a tag, you can never really know what hybrid it is, technically it will always be NO-ID, but it looks a lot like the perloric form of Phal. Baldan's Kaleidoscope 'Lycastanopsis' , which you can look at the Norman's Orchids website.

Jeremy, without the flowers fully opened you can't tell if it is a peloric or not. having said that, it "looks" like Phal Baldan's Kaleidoscope "Golden Treasure'

this is to show how "similar" flowers can look and not be the same hybrid and is why one may never make an ID of a NOID.

This is what some call "semi-peloric". Note the pinching of the petals. In a true peloric that would resemble the lip of the orchid.

While this is obviously a different flower, it demonstrates a peloric flower.
