I bought this from a vendor on Ebay a few years ago. The plant came with a label that says "Den. Nobile Tomoflake." I have no idea if this is a Tomoflake hybrid, or actually a hybrid named Tomoflake. The plant flowered for the first time just now, and regardless of the name, they are spectacular.

There is a Dendrobium nobile type hybrid that is named Tomoflake so you probably have that. The label you put in the pot should read "Dendrobium Tomoflake". Just remember that it's a nobile type hybrid.

Thanks Carl. That was my first guess as well, but I'm a bit skeptical, since Tomoflake was not in quotes on the label. Also this comes from a vendor who sent me another "mystery nobile plant" with a wrong label...I sort of like it, since they appear to be unique hybrids that he is sending to me without knowing it. Do you happen to have a picture of a generic Tomoflake hybrid?

No, I don't have a picture of D Tomoflake. I don't know where you would find one.

Also, there shouldn't be any quotation marks around Tomoflake. Quotation marks are used to identify particular clones - not the grex itself.

Subtribe Dendrobiinae (Soft-Canes) - a set on Flickr

Hi Naoyuki, this Flickr page includes a photo of a Den. Tomoflake (7th row down, 3rd from the left in the thumbnails) that doesn't look much like yours. However, remember that the grex just refers back to the species in the ancestry, which in a complex hybrid may not denote much actual genetic commonality (depending on which individuals of which species were used, which remakes of which grexes, etc.). So, it's certainly possible that your plant is a Tomoflake...or maybe not! In any case it's got very nice blooms, one of my favorite nobile-type hybrids I've seen.

You can always use the RHS orchid register to check for any hybrids and see the parentage as well. I find it very useful. I sometimes use it when I see hybrids that I really like so I know what the parents were and then can be on the lookout for other hybrids with the same parent.
